Gerhard Richter

Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden, which after World War II became part of the German Democratic Republic.

He left East Germany shortly before the Berlin Wall was built in 1962 and settled in Düsseldorf. He has since become one of the most successful and influential painters. (© Tate, London 2016)
