Art practice and new materials

This project is split into two sub-themes, related by use of materials.

The impact of new science on art and its conservation

Dr Andrea Hamilton, School of Engineering, University of Strathclyde

These sub-themes seek to answer:

  1. what impact new materials and processing technology has on current art practice and especially on artists whose works feature in ARTIST ROOMS and
  2. longevity and material stability of new mixed media and unusual material combinations in the ARTIST ROOMS collection.

The first sub theme will focus on the more speculative aspect of ARTIST ROOMS practices, in particular as yet unidentified acquisitions currently being created or commissioned for ARTIST ROOMS.

The project brings practicing artists into contact with current scientific techniques and materials such as nanolithography, smart materials, crystal engineering and nanoscale imaging, in order to create an on going dialogue with the laboratory facilities and with research expertise in order to explore and document their work and creative process.

The second sub theme explores the conservation challenge presented when faced with a juxtaposition of non-traditional materials and unusual material combinations. How these works should be handled and preserved will be examined through a series of durability studies and experiments.
