Calculators and Dictionaries Policy
Policy on items permitted and not permitted during exams.
Items Not Permitted
Both the University and the College of Science and Engineering have exam policies to prevent unauthorised access to any material that could give an advantage to any student. Items not permitted include:
- Dictionaries
- Reference books
- Computers
- Calculators - unless specifically permitted for an exam, in which case see the list of authorised calculators below
- Calculators or watches that can store text
- Mobile phones, PDAs, or other electronic devices
During examinations mobile phones must be switched off.

For some examinations you may use a calculator from the list below. Invigilators may inspect these at any time during exams.
It is each student's responsibility to ensure that they remember to bring their calculator to the exam, and that its batteries are in good working order. Invigilators cannot provide calculators, nor will they be able to help if the batteries fail.

Exceptions
- Students taking courses where dictionaries, reference books, computers, calculators, electronic devices or any other material is an integral part of the assessment process. These exceptional arrangements require examiner authorisation and are recorded in the exam’s instructions.
