Student volunteering celebrated

A week-long programme of events promoting the positive community impact of student volunteering is to be held at the University.

The events, hosted by Edinburgh University Students’ Association’s volunteering service, are to coincide with the nationwide Student Volunteering Week.

Student Volunteering Week, coordinated by the National Union of Students, runs from 11 to 15 February.

Events and activities

The University-based celebration will launch with a three-hour volunteering tour on board a vintage London Routemaster bus.

The tour will make stops at:

  • the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland
  • Sikh Sanjog, a charity supporting women and their families from Sikh or other minority ethnic backgrounds
  • North Edinburgh Dementia Care
  • Mindroom, supporting people with learning difficulties
  • community development agency, Comas.

A volunteering fair, hosting a wide range of local and national charities, will be held on 14 February.

Opportunities

Since EUSA launched its volunteering service in 2010, 2,700 students have been placed in volunteering roles.

Edinburgh students have access to a broad range of activities, from helping at a sports club for disabled children to volunteering at Gorgie City Farm.

Participating in Student Volunteering Week is a fantastic way for our student volunteers to celebrate their impact and achievements, while at the same time encouraging more students to volunteer. Volunteering is a great way for students to do something worthwhile, meet new people, have fun and boost their CV, all for an average time commitment of just two hours per week.
