Chancellor’s Assessor named
The University’s Chancellor, HRH The Princess Royal, has invited Sheriff Principal Edward Bowen CBE TD QC to act as her Assessor on the University Court.

He will take up the appointment with immediate effect for an initial period of four years.
Court member
The Chancellor’s Assessor is a full member of Court and as such can also be appointed to Court Committees.
The post holder is also an ex officio member of the Development Trust and holds various appointments in respect of the General Council.
Prestigious career
Sheriff Principal Bowen was educated at Melville College and the University of Edinburgh.
He was called to the Scottish Bar in 1970 and practiced mainly in civil work.
In December 1979 he became Advocate Depute and prosecuted in the High Court for four years before being appointed Sheriff of Tayside Central and Fife in Dundee in 1983.
In 1990 he resigned from the shrieval bench and resumed practice.
He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1992.
Five years later he was appointed Sheriff Principal of Glasgow and Strathkelvin before transferring to the Sheriffdom of Lothian and Borders in 2005 retiring from that office in May 2011.
Sheriff Principal Bowen was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2010 New Year’s Honours List.
