New dementia research centre
The School of Philosophy, Psychology & Language Sciences is to host a new centre for dementia research.

The venture, funded by a six-figure grant from Alzheimer Scotland, will launch on World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September.
High-quality investigations
Professor John Starr, Co-Director of the University’s Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology, is to lead the new centre.
Working in collaboration with Alzheimer Scotland, the facility will provide a high-quality research environment for investigations into dementia.
The centre will commission and build a balanced portfolio of scientific and clinical research and develop and maintain a dementia brain tissue bank.
Awards double
The Alzheimer Scotland grant was one of 22 to be awarded to the College of Humanities & Social Science during the month of June, new figures from ERI reveal.
June’s awards total was almost double the quantity received by the College for the same period in 2010.
Science and medicine
The College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine received 30 grants during June.
Among those awards were funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council to investigate livestock-associated staphylococcus aureas and a grant from the Multiple Sclerosis Society to support clinical trials in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis.
Among the 28 awards granted to the College of Science & Engineering, was funding from the Natural Environment Research Council for a research network in surface temperature.
