The Researcher and Practitioner Mixer is a showcase event hosted by the Global Environment and Society Academy (GESA) inviting members of industry to work alongside academic staff and students.

Bringing together researchers within the fields of environment and society from across the University, this is a chance to foster connections with partners and representatives from industry, commerce and environmental organisations, as well as NGOs and charities.

In addition to providing professional networking opportunities, there is also scope for interdisciplinary research collaboration, whereby students ‘pitch’ their dissertation research proposals to members of academic staff and representatives from external organisations.

It is hoped that a number of student proposals will be of significant interest to representatives of the organisations, who may ask students to conduct a research project for their company.

The event was piloted in November 2012, with over 40 industrial representatives from the fields of environment, science and technology. As a result of highly successful professional networking and excellent student pitches, 22 of our Masters students conducted research for a commercial partner.

Following on from this success, this year the scope will be much wider. Organisations from across all sectors of environment and society (including architecture, construction, forestry, carbon management, water management and public engagement and science communication) will be joined by masters students from the Edinburgh College of Art and the Schools of Law, Informatics, Social and Political Science and GeoSciences.

We'll also be hosting a wine reception in the new Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI) building in High School Yards from 5-7pm. Guests, staff and students are invited to join us there.
