Abstract

The rich and varied tapestry of musical culture in early eighteenth-century Venice, which produced works like Vivaldi’s 'Four Seasons', appears quite modern and familiar in some respects: The famous 'ospedali', trained female musicians of international calibre who played all conceivable instruments, and the rich and famous travelled from far and wide to hear, and gossip about, their favourite star singers of the day. However, early modern Venetian musical life unfolded within a framework of social, political and economic hierarchies as well as cultural and religious beliefs that differed markedly from those of the scholars who have studied it subsequently.

This Music Research Seminar features current students on the MMus Musicology Programme. Colin Barr, Yiran Feng, Linhui Ling, Sophie McCarthy and Shaopei Zhang will present their academic posters dealing with the question how scholars’ retrospective vantage points have impacted on their understanding and evaluation of various aspects of music in early modern Venice.

Attendees will have the opportunity to study the posters from 5:15 pm. This will be followed by the student presentations and a question-and-answer session after each of the presentations.
