Abstract

This talk will focus on my site-specific music, how these works seek to translate design and architectural features into aural textures, resulting in multi-sensory experiences that create a symbiotic relationship between sight and sound. I will explore several projects, including my newest work for Le Corbusier’s Chapel of Notre-Dame du Haut, July 2023.

Biography

Tree Burton's first compositional studies were taken at the University of Glasgow. She then completed an MMus and PhD (in composition) at the University of Edinburgh. During her PhD studies she was awarded several scholarships that enabled her to undertake research in New York, resulting in a large-scale orchestral work influenced by the architecture of the Chrysler Building. Tree’s music is informed by a variety of artistic disciplines: painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, and dance. Her most recent work is centred around the creation of site-specific music in response to modernist and contemporary architecture. She has worked with festivals including Open House Chicago, Barcelona Architecture Week, Doors open Day Edinburgh and Architecture Fringe creating music for buildings such as Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion and Carr Chapel.
