Art writing

Many researchers within ECA have a core interest with the future of art writing, art and text, and interpretation.

Researchers in Edinburgh College of Art

ECA is currently in the process of developing a new role for a cross-School Fellow in Art Writing and Publication to lead courses on the topic, and a Chancellor’s Fellow, Dr Maria Fusco, works in this area.

Such activity reflects the high degree of interest now in fresh responses to art works, through creative writing, criticism and art history. Examples include Creative Writing and Art History by Catherine Grant and Patricia Ruben, eds (Wiley, 2012), the NGS’s own publication series Inspired? Get Writing!, in which ARTIST ROOMS works featured, and Talbot Rice Gallery’s student writing competition in 2010 to accompany Jenny Holzer: Blue Purple Tilt.

Art writing will be a productive area for seminars, conferences and workshops, exploring the potential for research activity, such as an edited collection among other outputs. Researching the role of art writing will also offer very fruitful interpretative strategies and provide links across the ‘Art and its Histories’ and ‘Engagement and Learning’ strands.
