Biochemical Society General travel grantsAvailable to Postgraduate, Early Career, Full, and Emeritus members, these grants assist with the cost of face-to-face attendance to support valuable opportunities to expand your network, present your work to topic experts, and benefit from world-class workshops. We appreciate that travel costs can vary depending on the location of the event. From 2024, we are therefore introducing the following two tiers of funding:

Genetics Society Junior scientist conference grantsThe Genetics Society invites applications for its junior scientist conference grants for non-society meetings. These enable junior scientists to attend non-society meetings in the area of genetics. Grants are worth up to £750 each, or up to £1,000 in the case of the Galton Institute co-sponsored awards, to cover travel, accommodation, and registration costs. Deadline: bimonthly deadlines |
British Society for Cell Biology, Honor Fell travel awardsThese enable society members at the beginning of their research careers to attend meetings or courses in the field of cell biology. Grants are worth up to £1,000 each. Deadline: None. |
Houghton Trust Travel grants for young research workers on avian diseasesCompetitive funding is available to provide grants for early-stage career avian disease researchers of any nationality for undertaking the following, in a country other than the country in which the applicant is based. Grants (up to a maximum of £1,500) may be awarded in full or in part. Applications must be made on the official form only. Deadlines 15 February, 15 June or 15 October each year. |
Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard: Ernst Mayr Travel GrantsApply for up to US$2.5k to visit museums (preferably MCZ collections) to undertake research needed to complete taxonomic revisions. Deadline 01 April and 15 October annually |
Biochemistry Society: Travel Award for International Skills and Knowledge ExchangeAvailable to all career stages. Value up to £2,000 per grant. Will cover costs for a visitor from a low-income economy country to a host laboratory in a high-income economy country in order to learn methods. Alternatively, the grants will support a person based in a high-income economy visiting a low-income economy country to assist with the set up of research. Royal Society of Chemistry Researcher Development and Travel GrantsResearcher Development and Travel Grants can provide up to £500 for PhD students and early career scientists in both industry and academia wishing to undertake an activity that supports their research career. The activities applied can be virtual or in-person. Examples include, but are not limited to, presenting work at conferences, developing new skills by attending training courses or developing networks by organising a scientific meeting. The Company of Biologists DMM Conference Travel GrantsTo support ECRs to attend (and particularly present at) scientific meetings, conferences, workshops and training courses. Maximum funding is set at £400 within the home country and at £600 for meetings overseas. Applied Microbiology International Scientific Event Travel GrantTo support members attending local and international AMI-approved scientific events such as conferences, symposia, workshops, training courses and meetings that advance the field of applied microbiology. This grant aims to foster knowledge exchange, networking opportunities, and professional development within the wider applied microbiology community. BBSRC International travel award schemeInternational travel awards are for BBSRC-supported researchers making visits to initiate or prepare proposals with international partners, visiting overseas facilities for up to one month or attending European consortia-building events. Humboldt Research FellowshipSupports research visits to Germany of 6-24 months (post docs) or 6-18 months (experienced researchers). Rolling deadline. |
Young Investigator Lecture Grants (EMBO)These enable meeting organisers to invite a young investigator to give a lecture. Grants are worth up to €800 for European meetings and up to €1,200 for international meetings to cover travel and accommodation costs. Deadline: N/A |
EMBO New Venture FellowshipsSupports early career scientists in any field of life science research to undertake research visits of up to three months to engage in a new area of research. No closing date. |
Ukrainian Short-Term FellowshipsThese enable active molecular life scientists who are resident in Ukraine, or who have been displaced from Ukraine as a result of war in the country, to visit a host laboratory for a period of up to four months. Fellowships include a stipend of €12,000 and a daily subsistence allowance of €100 per day, No Deadline. |
EMBO Scientific exchange grantsThese enable scientists to visit laboratories in European Molecular Biology Conference member states, associated member states and cooperating partners in order to facilitate valuable collaborations between research groups applying techniques that are unavailable in the applicant's laboratory. Fellowships cover travel plus subsistence for visits of one week to three months Deadline: no deadline for applications, however it is recommended to apply three months before the proposed starting date |
BHF Advanced Training AwardsThese enable researchers within one to three years of submitting their PhD to retrain and gain additional expertise in an established research institution in the UK. Researchers must be moving into a different field of science. No deadline. |

Federation of European Biochemical Societies, Summer FellowshipsThese fellowships enable students to visit an institution within the federation’s area in a country outside their country of study to gain practical scientific experience. Gatsby Grants to Exceptional ResearchersThis supports research projects that are unlikely to attract funding from research councils or other agencies and that require pump priming, bridging funds, equipment or funds for developing community resources.
