4. Aims

The aim of the project is to monitor and evaluate the National Schistosomiasis and Soil Transmitted Helminths Control Programme in Zimbabwe, which has been launched in 2012. This project has the overall objective of evaluating the success of the control programme in terms of infection reduction, as well as the effect of treatment on parasite population structure (particularly in parasite sensitivity to the antihelminthic drug praziquantel) and in side effects. The study is part of the larger monitoring and evaluation programme of the National Schistosome Control Programme, where 30 schools have been selected throughout the country as sentinel sites for monitoring over the next 5 years
