Appeals
The appeals procedure explained.
In the School of Biological Sciences we do everything we can to demonstrate our fairness.
If you are surprised by your exam result and would like guidance, we suggest that you discuss this first with your Student Adviser.
They can then approach the course organiser or the Director of the Biology Teaching Organisation (BTO) and be in a much better position to advise you.
What we will do
- We would ask the relevant people to check that your marks had been calculated correctly.
- In the unlikely event that an error had been made we would immediately correct it.
- We would also be able to tell you those parts of the examination in which you under-performed.
If you wish to appeal against a decision made by a Board of Examiners, you will find the procedure described on the Academic Services website.
A formal appeal against a decision of an Examination Board should be submitted to the Academic Appeals office. The only grounds for appeal are that:

For good reason (which was beyond your control) the examiners were not made aware of relevant information that affected your performance.

You have reason to believe that the University did not conduct the assessment properly.
The appeals procedure cannot be invoked simply on the grounds that you got a mark of 39%, just short of a pass mark, and would like us to reconsider your scripts.
- Examination Boards will already have considered all these cases very carefully.
- They will have asked the External Examiner to look at the scripts, to see if there is any possibility that the marking was severe.
- The External Examiner will advise that the mark be upgraded, because an extra one or two marks could potentially be justified.
- If the mark is left at 38 or 39, then the External Examiner can find no grounds for "leniency". This means that the marks may already be considered generous and should go no higher.
