Background
Yupei Wei (she/her) is a PhD researcher at the University of Edinburgh. Her research interests are English as a foreign language (EFL) education, intercultural communication competence (ICC), teaching practice and teaching materials. The current research she is working on is investigating how teachers agentively grapple with the demands of ICC in policy in EFL classrooms in Chinese primary schools. She graduated in a Master programme of Educational Studies from the University of Glasgow. She was an English tutor in China before starting her academic journey in the UK.
Research summary
Yupei Wei’s PhD research examines how teachers in Chinese primary schools navigate the demands of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) as outlined in policy within their English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. This research focuses on how teachers deal with the conflicts between self and other cultures in ICC development in their EFL classrooms from perceptions and practice aspects.
Knowledge exchange
Attended a Summer School which was organised by the Europe Educational Research Association at the University of Belgrade in Serbia from the 12th to 14th of July 2023, and the topic is inclusive approaches to educational research, link: https://nauka.f.bg.ac.rs/eera2023/
Current project grants
Fieldwork for her current PhD research has been funded by Tweedie Research Fellowship, from March to August 2024. The fellowship has been issued by College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Science at the University of Edinburgh.
