Yana Proskurkina

Teaching Fellow (Ukrainian)

Background

I’m a Ukrainian Teaching Fellow and Course Organiser for Ukrainian at the Centre for Open Learning. I joined the Languages for All team in 2023.  I  teach Introduction to Ukrainian Language and Cultures credit courses in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, as well as Ukrainian language courses for the wider community. I also design and develop Ukrainian courses and create teaching materials to support learners at different levels.

Prior to joining the Centre for Open Learning, I taught Ukrainian and Russian at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, working with international students in a diverse and multicultural setting.

My thesis, The Pre-Professional Training System of Foreign Applicants for Study at Medical Universities, explored how to prepare international students for academic and professional study. I have also authored and co-authored four textbooks on teaching the scientific style to international students, offering practical methods for working with texts that combine scientific and professional terminology.

Alongside research and teaching, I’m passionate about making Ukrainian accessible and engaging, helping students not only learn the language but also connect with its rich culture and context.
