Biography

Background

Born and raised in West Berlin, I studied history and political science in Berlin and France (Montpellier), as well as spending three years at the European University Institute in Florence. My PhD thesis on the German aristocracy and the Nazi movement was awarded the Hans Rosenberg prize. After lecturing in modern Western European history at the three universities in Berlin (TU/HU/FU) and the University of Cologne, I was a Kennedy Fellow at Harvard University in 2005-2006, a research fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies in 2008-2009, and a lecturer in modern European history at University College Dublin from 2009 to 2012.

My publications have mostly been on on elites and fascism, the history of the European nobility in the 20th century, '1968' and consumer history, autobiographies, the strengths and limitations of cultural history, as well as twentieth-century European colonial history and its links to the annihilation brought about by the Nazi occupation of Europe. My research interests have been focused on what Eric Hobsbawm called ‘the age of extremes’ (1914-1991). I came to the University of Edinburgh as a DAAD Lecturer in 2012 and became a permanent member of staff in 2014, a senior lecturer in 2020 and a professor in 2024.

In 2020, I published a book on the German nobility and the Nazi movement with Oxford University Press as well as a book on the former German royal family, its relation with the Nazi movement and its PR efforts after 1945. The book, which will be published in English with Penguin in 2025, was awarded with the German non-fiction-prize in 2022. 

I am currently working on a book exploring real and imagined connections between European colonialism and Nazi rule in Europe. The work is intended to critically examine the increasingly dynamic interpretations of the National Socialist 'Empire' of destruction as a subcategory of colonial violence. 

In the longer term, I am planning to write a history of what has been called, in a formula the Nazis stole from the left, 'the great anti-capitalist longing'. I am interested in the history of this 'longing', its manifestations and avatars, expressed by actors as diverse as early communists, the Nazis, conservative noblemen, ideologues in the GDR, the 'new left' during the 60s and the anti-globalisation movements of the present.

At HCA I have lectured on team taught courses (The Making of the Modern World, Themes in Modern European History, Revolutions in Modern Europe) and I am the course organiser of 'The Third Reich', 'Colonial Wars in the 20th century', 'Hannah Arendt and the Breakdown of European Civilization' and a special subject course called 'Stage of Extremes.
