Background
Dr Gamal has obtained her PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Edinburgh in 2016. Sam's research focused on developing innovative platforms for studying cellular behaviour, disease mechanisms as well as investigating potential therapeutic approaches for age-related macular degeneration and liver disease. Following her PhD, Sam worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine, University of Edinburgh, studying electrical and mechanical properties of stem and breast cancer cells. She then worked as a PDRA at Bangor University developing a platform for cancer stem cell isolation. Following this, Sam joined Heriot-Watt University working towards developing sensors for wound healing monitoring of chronic wounds.
In 2021, Sam joined the research funding team at Worldwide Cancer research where she gained expertise in research funding and administration. Sam joined the Roslin Institute in May 2024 as the Strategic Research Co-ordinator for the Easter Bush Campus.
Sam is really passionate about Research Culture and EDI, and has been a member of several committees including the Athena Swann self-assessment and consultation teams at Heriot-Watt University. She led on various projects and initiatives supporting early career researchers, female researchers as well as researchers from low-and-middle income countries.
Prior to her PhD studies, Sam was an assistant lecturer in Alexandria, Egypt.
