I don't have an office in the LLC building and due to my various other duties (as CAHSS Dean and EFI Co-Director of Education), I tend to have varied availability during the week. The easiest way to arrange a meeting (to be held online, via Teams) is to send me an email (s.rolle@ed.ac.uk).

Background

Sabine completed her PhD and started her academic career in Germany, at the University of Erlangen. In 1998 she moved to Britain and held various part-time teaching and research assistant jobs at the University of Manchester, the Open University and the University of Edinburgh before being appointed to a full-time lecturing post at this university in 2005. Award of Personal Chair in 2022.

In the German Section, Sabine taught courses on German language, discourse analysis (Migration in German Language Discourse) and medieval literature (The Nibelungenlied and its Reception in Modern Germany). In the Edinburgh Futures Institute (https://efi.ed.ac.uk), she is Programme Director for the new MA (Hons) Interdisciplinary Futures and also responsible for the course Students as Change Agents.

Major leadership positions include the role of LLC UG Director from 2012-17 and CAHSS Dean of UG Education from 2017-2023. In 2019, Sabine joined the Edinburgh Futures Institute to lead on the development of the UG provision and was appointed Co-Director of Education (UG) in 2022. Areas of interest for supervision

Sabine would be happy to discuss supervision of the following topics: theory and practice of scholarly editing, medieval German literature, reception of the Middle Ages in modern Germany.

Research summary

One of Sabine's major research interests lies in the field of textual criticism and theory of editions, more specifically the manuscript tradition of German medieval texts (Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival in particular). She co-directed a research project on that topic in the early stages of her career and it is also the basis of some of the course modules she teaches. More recently, Sabine has become interested in the reception of the Middle Ages in modern Germany, from the 19th century onwards and including the GDR; one of her research projects concerns the reception of the Nibelungenlied in the writings of Franz Fühmann.

Current research interests

To make time for education development and leadership positions, Sabine has decided to temporarily reduce research projects and is currently not research active.
