Background

Ruth is an experienced applied qualitative researcher with a background in the social sciences, specifically applied social research and anthropology. Her substantive interests and expertise encompass:

  • Experiences of ill health, health care/services and involvement in clinical trials.
  • Decision-making about self-care, help-seeking, treatment and trial participation.
  • Education and support for health-related decision-making and behaviour change.

Ruth has conducted work relevant to a range of health conditions and clinical areas including diabetes, cancer, and inflammatory arthritis. She joined the University of Edinburgh in 2017, having previously worked at the universities of York and Newcastle. Earlier in her career, Ruth held research and evaluation roles in the third and private sectors.
