Thesis title: The Empire Built by ‘Turkish’ Bow: Revising Ottoman Archery

Background

Rik Janssen is a PhD student in the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures. He studies the history of archery in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. Before arriving in Edinburgh, Rik completed a BA and MA in Middle Eastern studies from Leiden University.

Research summary

Rik's interests span the cultural, political and social history of the Turco-Persianate world from the late medieval to the contemporary era, with a particular focus on the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. His interdisciplinary research explores the intersections between gender, identity, imperialism and empire-building, militarism, nationalism and nation-building, and sport. His doctoral project explores the history of Ottoman archery, combining his scholarly expertise with his passion for archery.

Past research interests

Rik wrote his MA thesis on the origins and development of scouting in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, and the broader Middle East. His BA thesis focused on masculinity in the Turkish TV series "Diriliş: Ertuğrul."
