Professor Richard Andrews

Background

Richard Andrews has held professorships at the Universities of Hull, York, UCL Institute of Education and the University of East Anglia. He is co-series editor with Vicki Wienand of the Cambridge School Shakespeare (Cambridge University Press) which launched in a Chinese edition in 2021 via Beijing Language and Culture University Press. He is series editor of Palgrave Studies in Multimodal Poetics (Palgrave Macmillan). 

He was, until recently, a member of the All Souls Group (Oxford) on education policy and is an associate of the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge. He is a member of the New Visions for Education Group and of the Global Education Deans’ Forum. Currently, he acts as external reviewer for the Chinese University of Hong Kong and was, from 2017-22, external examiner for Hong Kong University. 

His latest academic book, Polyrhythmicity in Language, Music and Society: complex time relations in the arts, humanities and social sciences, was published by Springer in 2021. Other recent publications are Multimodality, Poetry and Poetics for Routledge (New York 2018), an article for the Swedish journal, Education and Democracy, on the importance of contemporary rhetoric for schools in England (2019) and a chapter on teacher education in England in Teaching the World’s Teachers, eds Lefty and Fraser (2020).  

To be published soon from Springer: Choreography of the Poem, on the relationship between dance, poetry and poetics. 

In 2025 he published a third book of poems with Terpsichore Press: Birdsong in the Subway: Poems from China and Japan, following Falling Uphill: Forty-Six Adirondack Poems (2021).

I supervise topics in the field of intercultural language use; argument and argumentation; academic English; poetics and contemporary rhetoric (the arts of discourse); and research methods in digital education.
