Research summary

Nanosensors, electrochemistry, SERS, nanotechnology, redox biology.

Research Overview

My group has pioneered to use of Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) to make measurements in 3D tissue models.

As part of this effort we have made new sensors to measure pH, redox potential, enzyme activity and concentration of small molecules and to make new materials for SERS that allow us to work in complex biological microenvironments.

We work in a very collaborative way that means we have access to patient materials and this has allowed us to push the frontiers of SERS in biology and medicine.

Current research interests

Developing new sensors. Incorporating sensors into 3D tissue models. Making measurements in tissue and biofluids.

Knowledge exchange

Turning scientific data and ideas into music.

This is a great way to communicate scientific ideas through a different medium.

Sectors: Analysis, Healthcare

I have expertise in bioanalytical chemistry particularly of biological samples. I predominantly use advanced Raman spectroscopies to analyse biological samples spanning biofluids and cell lines to fixed tissues and have experience of techniques such as NMR, MS and ICP-MS. I have worked with a range of industrial partners in joint research projects (e.g. co-funded studentships) in KTP awards and on tightly scoped consultancy projects (e.g. carrying out due diligence).
