Background
Dr Michele Saraiva Carilo is a Teaching Fellow in Language Education and Programme Director of MSc Language and Intercultural Communication at the Moray House School of Education and Sport, University of Edinburgh. She joined the University of Edinburgh in September 2022 as a staff member. Before joining the University of Edinburgh, Dr Saraiva Carilo was a Lecturer in Portuguese and the Co-ordinator for the Portuguese Language Programme at the Ohio State University (2019-2022) where she developed and enacted curriculum based on Critical and Intercultural Pedagogies, and designed online, face-to-face, and hybrid courses for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
Dr Saraiva Carilo's central teaching and research interests are related to Applied Linguistics, Intercultural Language Education, Language Teacher Education, Critical Pedagogies, Romance Languages - especially Brazilian varieties of Portuguese and Interlanguages across South America, Decolonisation of Language Teaching and Learning, and Inclusive Language. She is the current representative of the Institute for Language Education at the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee and a member of the Research Group TILTED (Towards Intersectionality in Language Teacher Education) with the Language(s), Interculturality, and Literacies Research Hub. Dr Saraiva Carilo serves as a co-editor-in-chief for the Brazilian English Language Teaching Journal. She is also a regular reviewer for international journals and book publishers, and an External Examiner of undergraduate/postgraduate programmes and PhD theses focusing on Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching and Learning, Culture, Curriculum, Intercultural Communication, and Education. Furthermore, Dr Saraiva Carilo is a member of AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics), ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) - to which she also serves as a secretary for the Portuguese SIG, and AATSP (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese ).
