Background

Mary Wright is a Senior Diabetes Research Nurse at the University of Edinburgh. She previously worked as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse in central London, following several years in General Practice where she developed expertise in long‑term condition management and patient education. Her early career in cardiac theatres strengthened her clinical precision and resilience.

After moving to Edinburgh, Mary joined NHS Lothian’s diabetes research team, delivering both pharmaceutical and academic studies and completing her V300 Non‑Medical Prescribing qualification. She now works on the Edinburgh Diabetes Remission Study, supporting participant care, clinical monitoring and study delivery within an 8–12 week total diet replacement programme investigating mechanisms of type 2 diabetes remission.

The Edinburgh Diabetes Remission Study (EDRS), led by Principal Investigator Dr Ahmad Al‑Mrabeh, investigates how excess fat within the pancreas contributes to the development of type 2 diabetes and how targeted weight‑loss interventions can reverse these processes. Using advanced MRI, metabolic profiling and stable isotope tracing, the study examines pancreatic lipotoxicity, de novo lipogenesis and inflammatory pathways across different stages of diabetes. Participants follow a structured low‑calorie weight‑loss programme alongside detailed metabolic testing and pancreatic imaging, enabling the team to map how these biological mechanisms change during diabetes progression and remission.

Within the EDRS, Mary supports the delivery of clinical and research procedures, guiding participants through the weight‑loss programme, coordinating study visits and carrying out metabolic assessments and monitoring. She works closely with the multidisciplinary study team to ensure high‑quality data collection across imaging, physiological testing and metabolic profiling, contributing to research that aims to deepen understanding of the mechanisms that drive type 2 diabetes and its remission.
