Background

Martina (She/Her) graduated from the University in Sheffield with a First Class honours degree in Biomedical Sciences in July 2019. She then started a PhD at the University of Sheffield in Professor Fiona Boissonade's group working on identifying molecular mechanisms underlying peripheral neuropathic pain. Martina obtained a knowledge exchange award in 2022 to undertake a research collaboration in Professor Ted Price's lab at the University of Texas at Dallas. She also attended an internship at Eli Lilly's UK Neuroscience Hub working on identifying genetic variants linked with trigeminal neuralgia.

After the completion of her PhD in June 2024, she moved to the University of Edinburgh to work as a postdoctoral research fellow in Professor Anna Williams lab where she is working to identify mechanisms to prevent neuronal degeneration in progressive multiple sclerosis and understand the disease pathophysiology across preclinical models.

Qualifications

BSc in Biomedical Sciences (Hons) – 1st class

Ph.D. University of Sheffield

Research summary

My scientific interests lie in understanding how neurons respond to and overcome damage, from mechanical injury to demyelination and inflammation. Specifically, I am interested in how different neuronal populations react to damage and how they might be differentially susceptible to maladaptive changes, with significance to multiple sclerosis, chronic pain and more broadly neurodegenerative diseases.
