Project activity

1. The Associations of Parental Disability with Child Attainment (ESRC/ADR UK/SGSSS funded PhD studentship research project, 2023-2027)

Little is known about the educational and psychosocial outcomes of children whose parents have disabilities, leaving them vulnerable to educational and wider inequalities. To address this gap, this research project will use linked-administrative datasets, including the Growing Up in England dataset and the Millennium Cohort Study and its linked National Pupil Database to explore the impact of parental disability on child outcomes. Building on linked-administrative data, this research has the potential to deepen understanding of how parental disability and related risk and resilient factors could influence children's outcomes and to inform policy and practice to best support this vulnerable population. 

This PhD research project is supervised by Dr Jasmin Wertz (University of Edinburgh), Prof Bonnie Auyeung (University of Edinburgh) and Dr Louise Marryat (University of Glasgow), all of whom are experts in child development with advanced quantitative research skills. 

 

2. Understanding of the health of people in contact with the criminal justice system, particularly in relation to mental health and substance use (SGSSS academic Internship project, May-July 2026)

This retrospective observational cohort study used the RELEASE dataset, which links prison, health and death records with nationwide coverage in Scotland, to examine the timing of accident and emergency department contacts related to mental health and substance use among people released from Scottish prisons.

This internship project is supervised by Dr Catriona Connell and Dr Richard Kjellgren (Salvation Army Centre for Addiction Services and Research, University of Stirling).
