Background
Laura graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1988 and worked for five years in a small animal practice in Edinburgh. In 1993, she moved to a part-time role in the practice and started lecturing in veterinary nursing (VN), which she continues to do at SRUC.
In 2014, having decreased her practice commitments, Laura joined the VMED team at R(D)SVS as a Teaching Fellow in Clinical Skills, becoming a lecturer in Professional Clinical Skills in 2018. Laura has a keen interest in veterinary and VN education.
In 2014 Laura was also appointed as Clinical Development Adviser for The Certificate of Veterinary Nursing Emergency and Critical Care (CertVNECC), a postgraduate qualification for veterinary nurses.
Laura has been a mentor for the Edinburgh Teaching Award (EdTA) at R(D)SVS since 2018.
Laura has taken on a role as coordinator and director of clinical EMS at R(D)SVS (2022).
Laura also volunteers at All4Paws (a R(D)SVS student-run clinic providing community support to pets of homeless/vulnerably housed people).
Laura’s main teaching interests are clinical skills, anatomy and physiology, wound management, ECC, diagnostic imaging, medical diseases and legal, professional and ethical issues. Laura’s research interests include developing interactive learning resources, interprofessional training, supporting the transition to clinical practice and developing resilience.

Postgraduate Certificate Teaching Qualification Further Education (PGCert TQFE) from the University of Dundee in 2015
Edinburgh Teaching Award (EdTA) in 2016 and 2022, to become a Fellow (FHEA) then Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).

Laura has been a statutory membership examiner (SME) for the RCVS since 2019.
