Kyle Morrison

Design Technician

Background

Kyle Morrison works as a Design Technician at the University of Edinburgh. His role involves combining creativity with technical skills to design products and services that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and user-friendly. Currently based at Innovation Services (a data-driven, design-led innovation hub at the Edinburgh Futures Institute), Kyle is working to transform aspects of the Edinburgh Futures Institute's experience and culture, making their co-creation services more agile, innovative, and accessible.

Previously, Kyle worked on two multimillion-pound research programmes exploring how to support healthy ageing in the workplace and promote productive later-life employment. This work underscores his passions for human psychology, inclusive and accessible design, and involving stakeholders, particularly end users, in the design process. Kyle's commitment to human-centred design practices is a fundamental aspect of his professional approach.

Kyle primarily works in the digital design field and strongly believes that design is a powerful tool for communication and storytelling. His work spans the various facets of digital design, including visual communication, user experience, and graphics. He regularly collaborates with academic teams and researchers to translate intricate research findings into engaging, accessible outputs, enabling broader engagement with academic and non-academic audiences.

Besides being an avid digital designer, Kyle has a profound interest in physical making, especially in prototyping and testing how products will function in real-world scenarios. He is highly skilled in many digital fabrication techniques, including 3D printing and laser cutting. His expertise has been utilised for several research projects aiming at gamified and interactive dissemination. His work has included creating physical outputs for the Institute for Design Informatics and the University of Edinburgh Business School.

Kyle has worked as a Design Technician at the Edinburgh College of Art and a Senior Research Technician at King's College London prior to joining the Edinburgh Futures Institute. His work has been instrumental in bridging the gap between theoretical research and practical, real-world application.
