Kathryn Redpath

Lecturer and Director of Academic Practice

Background

I am a Lecturer at English Language Education (ELE), within the Centre for Open Learning (COL). To date much of my work has focused on the teaching and management of credit-bearing English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses for undergraduates and foundation students. I was Course Coordinator for Foundation and Visiting students and Course Organiser for Foundation English for Academic Purposes between 2014 - 2020 and I am currently Course Organiser for Academic English for Visiting Students 2. More recently I have become Course Organiser for our Academic Language and Literacies provision for the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures and I contributed to the design and teaching of the first iteration of our Edinburgh Teaching English for Academic Purposes (TEAP) course for professionals: https://ele.ed.ac.uk/courses-for-teaching-professionals/teaching-english-for-academic-purposes-teap

My current EAP interests focus on promoting pedagogies of care and compassion, neurodiversity and difference, as well as academic integrity and the critical and ethical use of Generative AI. I also contribute to the field by acting in a voluntary capacity as Events Officer (2025 - 2028) for BALEAP, which supports the professional development of those involved in learning, teaching, scholarship and research in English for Academic Purposes (EAP).  https://www.baleap.org/about-baleap

In addition to my English for Academic Purposes work, with a strong interest in educational leadership, I am committed to the creation and continuity of thriving and supportive communities of practice among educators, creating networks that encourage collaboration and professional growth. As Director of Academic Practice, I work with colleagues across Centre for Open Learning to facilitate the sharing of good practice in teaching and scholarship. I am currently designing a series of sharing practice events, a peer observation programme via a digital hub. I held a similar role, COL Director of Learning and Teaching, between 2018 - 2020.

Prior to my appointment at Edinburgh, I taught English in Spain and South Korea.
