Dr Jon Riddell

Core Scientist in Functional Genetics

Background

I am a Core Scientist at The Roslin Institute, working within the Department of Functional Genetics. My research focuses on the molecular and genetic processes that drive the development of skin and skin-associated appendages.

I obtained a BSc (Hons) in Genetics from the University of Glasgow before completing a PhD at the University of Edinburgh. My doctoral research explored the molecular basis of hair shape variation in human populations, identifying key genetic factors influencing this trait. I then continued at the University of Edinburgh as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, where I studied the mechanisms that regulate embryonic skin development. After this, I moved into a research role focused on stem cell technologies before taking up my current position as a Core Scientist.

With expertise in genetics, developmental biology, and stem cell research, I am particularly interested in how fundamental biological processes shape skin formation and function. My work aims to advance knowledge with potential applications in health, disease, and regenerative medicine.
