Background
John graduated from University College Dublin in 2006 and began his career in mixed practice. He completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at the University of Glasgow and subsequently took part in a research project at Michigan State University. John moved to Edinburgh in 2009, completing a Residency in Small Animal Surgery in 2013. He was awarded the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery in 2012. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
He worked as a Lecturer in Small Animal Surgery at University College Dublin from 2013 to 2016. He became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (Dipl.ECVS) in 2015. John returned to Edinburgh and the Hospital for Small Animals in 2016, where, in addition to his clinical roles, he has served, at various times, as Head of REPAIR Centre for Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation (2017- present), Co-Director of Rotating Internship (2016-20), Director of HfSA Clinical Teaching (2020-22) and Head of Surgery (2022-25). He is currently Head of Hospital for Small Animals.
John enjoys all aspect of small animal surgery, with particular interests in chronic pain management and rehabilitation, fracture repair and feline trauma.
John is a Senior Lecturer in Small Animal Orthopaedics and is involved in organisation and delivery of teaching to Y3 and Y5 BVM&S students as well as supervision of DVetMed students.
