Background

João graduated from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD - Portugal) in 2014. For his final year student project, he investigated the relationship between vertebral malformations and intervertebral disc extrusions in French Bulldogs. João started his professional career with a small animal rotating internship at UTAD Veterinary Teaching Hospital followed by general practice experience in private veterinary hospitals in Portugal. In 2017, João moved to the UK to undertake a neurology internship at a busy private referral hospital. After the internship, João was delighted to be offered a Neurology and Neurosurgery residency at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), in London, which he completed in June 2022. At the same time, João also complete his master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine at the RVC (MVetMed. He is a RCVS and EBVS® Recognised Veterinary Specialist in Neurology since March 2024 and currently a senior lecturer in veterinary Neurology and Neurosurgery. His main areas of interest are diagnostic and treatment of acute myelopathies, vertebral malformations, and spinal arachnoid diverticula in dogs and cats. He is currently pursuing a PhD in collaboration with Ghent University, focusing on spinal meningeal diseases in dogs and cats, while also engaging in translational research linking veterinary and human medicine.
