Iona Whittington

Engagement Officer

Background

I joined the Public Engagement team at the Roslin Institute in 2025 as an Engagement Officer. My role focuses on connecting the groundbreaking research taking place here with schools, communities, and the wider public by finding creative and inclusive ways to make science engaging, accessible, and relevant to everyone.

Before joining the University of Edinburgh, I worked in education for several years, most recently as Head of Science at an all-boys school in South London. During my time, I developed innovative teaching resources, and supported students across all abilities to achieve their potential. I’ve always been passionate about helping young people see the value of science in their own lives and discover the confidence to explore it further.

My move into public engagement was driven by a desire to widen that impact. I wanted to create experiences that spark curiosity, build understanding, and celebrate how research shapes the world around us. I’m particularly interested in how storytelling and creative approaches can help people connect with science on a personal level.

Originally from Scotland, I’m delighted to be back home and part of the Roslin community. Outside of work, I love painting, exploring the outdoors, and spending time with my golden retriever, Fern.
