Background
After a first degree in Hispanic Studies at the University of Glasgow and completing her PhD at the University of Nottingham, Dr Iona Macintyre took up her position in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (SPLAS) in 2007. Her doctoral research was published in the monograph 'Women and Print Culture in Post-Independence Buenos Aires'.
Undergraduate teaching
Iona currently teaches courses on 1) Latin American culture, history, and literature and 2) Spanish to English translation.

Iona welcomes enquiries regarding MScR and PhD supervision. She is happy to discuss topics related to Portuguese and Spanish translation, and 19th, 20th and 21st-century Latin American culture, history and literature.
Research summary
Iona’s research lies in two main areas, nineteenth-century Latin American cultural studies, with a specialism in Argentina, and, also, the history, practice and theory of translation in Latin America. For example, she has recently presented on the translation into Spanish of James Baldwin in 1960s Buenos Aires.
She and Elisabeth Goemans (KU Leuven) are currently collaborating on a paper on the Dutch and English translations of Rodolfo Walsh’s genre-defining work 'Operación masacre' (1957).
Iona is a Portuguese to English and Spanish to English translator, sometimes in collaboration with award-winning indie publisher Charco Press. She and Fiona Mackintosh’s co-translation of The Adventures of China Iron, a novel by Argentinian author Gabriel Cabezón Cámara, was shortlisted for the International Booker prize in 2020. More recently, Iona edited Padma Viswanathan’s translation of On Earth as it is Beneath, a novel by Brazilian writer Ana Paula Maia which is on the 2026 shortlist.
