Background
As Director of English Language Education at the Centre for Open Learning (COL), I have strategic oversight for all English for Academic Purposes (EAP) provision for the University’s students. My remit covers pathway provision for international students, such as pre-sessional EAP, both online and on-campus, as well as work on COL’s International Foundation Programme. I also have oversight for all in-sessional academic and literacies provision, which is open to all students regardless of their language background and is delivered mainly using an embedded approach in collaboration with Schools and programmes.
Prior to my appointment at the University of Edinburgh, I worked as an EAP Coordinator at the University of Bristol and as Head of the EAP Centre at a joint-venture university in Shanghai, China. I have spent almost two decades in various teaching contexts in China and Taiwan and I retain a passion for and commitment to my classroom practice alongside my strategic leadership priorities. While I am not a published researcher, I have delivered a number of practice-based presentations on academic language and literacies development.
