Gemma Brown

Lecturer in Clinical Psychology

Background

I joined the Department of Clinical Psychology in 2022 and work part-time as a Lecturer in Clinical Psychology. I work primarily on the MSc Applied Psychology (Healthcare) For Children and Young People.  Alongside my role at the university, I work part-time as a Senior Clinical Psychologist in the NHS.  I have experience working in various NHS settings including early intervention services.

Research summary

My research interests are around the development of, and interventions for, a range of mental health difficulties, particularly in children and adolescents. This includes the role of parents, carers and key adults. I am curious about what works for different people and the factors that influence delivery, engagement and outcome in therapy.

I am keen to pursue projects in relation to the application of therapeutic modalities (e.g. cognitive behavioural therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy) across different settings and consider how evidence-based practice can be implemented in a ‘real-world’ setting by drawing on implementation science. I have a particular interest in early intervention and the implementation of community or school-based psychological interventions, both targeted/universal and delivered by mental health/non-mental health professionals. I am also interested in single session interventions. My research has primarily focused on CBT-informed interventions for anxiety and low mood in school settings (e.g. Let's Introduce Anxiety Management) and exploring how this may be adapted to meet individual need. For example, those who have experienced trauma or are neurodivergent.
