Background

Emily completed an integrated Master’s degree (MSci) in Neuroscience at the University of Glasgow. As part of her studies, she undertook a placement year at the University of Edinburgh in Dr Tom MacGillivray’s group, contributing to the FutureMS study by investigating changes in retinal blood vessels during the early stages of multiple sclerosis. For her dissertation, she examined compensatory mechanisms for auditory processing in children with autism compared to those with auditory impairment.

Motivated by a desire to contribute to research that improves the lives of people affected by neurodegenerative diseases, Emily joined Professor Siddharthan Chandran’s laboratory at the University of Edinburgh. Working in close collaboration with the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic, she focuses on identifying biomarkers of ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases, while contributing to the lab’s wider research into disease mechanisms in a collaborative and translational setting.

Qualifications

MSci Neuroscience (First-Class Honours) - University of Glasgow

Research summary

Emily’s research interests centre on understanding the cellular and molecular changes that underlie neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular focus on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). She is especially interested in investigating how pathological changes in the protein TDP-43 contribute to disease mechanisms, and in identifying blood-based biomarkers that can provide insight into these processes.
