Eli Appleby-Donald (MSc Digital Education, FHEA, CDLP)

Learning Technologist

Background

Eli brings learning technologist experience from across the University of Edinburgh since 2013, including roles in the School of Divinity, Edinburgh College of Art and the Business School.

As an experienced Learning Technologist, Eli supports academic and professional services staff in their use of digital technologies for teaching, learning and assessment. This includes troubleshooting, advising on appropriate tools and approaches, and developing practical training and support materials. Her work focuses on aligning technology with pedagogy, ensuring that digital approaches enhance, rather than drive, teaching practice.

Areas of Interest

Eli has a particular interest in teaching presence in online and blended learning, and how this can be effectively designed and maintained at scale. Other areas of interest include social learning, experiential learning, studio pedagogy, flipped learning, and the use of multimedia, particularly video, to support engagement and understanding.

Current Projects

  • Leading the launch of a new Media Suite for UEBS, providing staff with access to high-quality facilities for video recording, podcasting and digital content creation, and supporting its integration into teaching through guidance and training.
  • TEL Representative for the Miro interactive collaboration platform

Previous Projects

  • Music, Style, Identity and Image in the Modern Age (UG) EUSA Teaching Award ‘Best Course’ overall winner, 2017
  • ‘Fundamentals of Music Theory’ MOOC (Coursera)

Professional Practice

Alongside her work in higher education, Eli creates digital learning content for a global audience through her YouTube channel and website, Eli and Kate, as well as designing and facilitating workshops for gardening charities and organisations.  This work provides a practical space to explore and apply approaches to teaching, communication and audience engagement in a real-world context.
