Background

I was born and raised in the Gambia, the smallest country in main land Africa. Growing up, I realised most times a class mate was absent from school was because he or she was affected by malaria. I always wondered why the health care system did not get rid of common mosquito breeding sites across the country such as clogged gutters and stagnant water puddles. I thought this was the first step to eradicating malaria and frequently talked my friends into playing a game of filling water puddles with sand.

Due to my interest in health care, after high school I decided to gain laboratory experience at a small private clinic and then volunteered at the Gambia National public health laboratories. My interest in improving health care peaked when I worked for the first tuberculosis (TB) nationwide prevalence survey in The Gambia in 2012. I realised how much of a burden tuberculosis was yet many Gambians are still unaware of this. Since then, I developed a drive to contribute to the fight against TB and continue to work as a biomedical scientist for TB research projects at Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
