Background

Édouard Notte is a Teaching Fellow in French and Francophone Studies in the Department of European Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh, where he has taught since 2006. He is the Course Organiser of Oral for French and Coordinator for French 1 B and FR 2 Spoken language. He teaches the 4th year Option Exploring Belgian Identities. He is also teaching FR 2 Literature and FR 1 B written language.

Alongside his teaching, Édouard  organises academic and cultural events promoting Belgian Francophone literature and culture. His academic interests include language pedagogy in higher education, curriculum design, Francophone literatures and cultures.

His teaching has been recognised through several University of Edinburgh awards and nominations, including the Recognition Award for Adaptation to Change (2021), the Excellent Contribution Award (2022), nominations for the Outstanding Course Award, the Innovative Teaching Award, the Best Feedback Award, and Teacher of the Year (2025). In 2026, he was longlisted for the Teacher of the Year Award in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Since 2011, Édouard has led the development of common teaching resources for pronunciation, aural comprehension, argumentation and debating activities across Spoken Language and Oral for French courses, enhancing the quality of the teaching and the consistency in assessment practices within the undergraduate programme. He is also responsible for the induction, training, and pedagogical mentoring of the department’s French lectrices and lecteurs, supporting their integration into the University’s teaching community.

Between 2016 and 2019, he supervised and supported the training of the student team participating in the inter-university debating competition (les Joutes Oratoires Interuniversitaires - Franco Débat UK), which reached the final of the competition organised by the Institut Français in London

Édouard holds a Master in Journalism and Communication (with Distinction) and Philosophy (with High Distinction) from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium. He obtained the Agrégation de l'Enseignement Secondaire Supérieur (AESS) from ULB in 1999, the Belgian postgraduate qualification for teaching. In addition, he has completed extensive professional development in the didactics of French as a Foreign Language under the supervision of Dr. Marie Eve Damar and in Belgian Francophone literature under the supervision of Prof. Marc Quaghebeur, Director of Les Archives et Musées de la Littérature .

Before joining the University of Edinburgh, he worked in journalism and in adult language education, teacher training, and educational consultancy, including the design and delivery of Erasmus+ professional development programmes for language teachers across Europe.
