Carbon Agri-Tools: Accounting and decision support systems for calculating emission reductions and offsets in carbon farming initiatives

Through their Communication on Sustainable Carbon Cycles (Dec. 2021), the European Commission has announced their intention to promote Carbon Farming as a "business model that rewards land managers for taking up improved land management practices, resulting in the increase of carbon sequestration in living biomass, dead organic matter and soils". This PhD - a joint project between Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, and the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen - intends to produce an agricultural GHG model/calculator compatible with the long-term requirements of Carbon Farming initiatives in Europe and elsewhere. Existing models/calculators will be modified to meet the requirements of these initiatives and where necessary will be expanded to cover multi-enterprise farms. The resulting tool(s) will be deployed in a pilot Carbon Farming initiative in Ireland that could serve as a model to follow in other countries.
