Background
Rafael is an applied mathematician working as a Lecturer at the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems. He holds a PhD in Optimization and Operations Research from the University of Edinburgh, and a Masters’ degree in applied mathematics from the University of Campinas, Brazil. His research focuses on the development of mathematical models for agriculture, food security and biodiversity conservation. He has focused on modelling the nexus of sustainable intensification-deforestation-livestock systems in Brazil.
Present and future research include modelling climate change adaption and social impacts of sustainable intensification pathways; the energy-livestock –deforestation nexus; optimizing global foot and mouth disease vaccine supply; and optimizing cryogenic conservation of livestock genetic resources.
