Background

I lead the Edinburgh Centre for Data, Culture & Society, a specialist hub for data-led and applied computational methods across the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.  I am responsible for the Centre's strategic direction and operations, and part of the  senior management team within the Edinburgh Futures Institute.

Since completing my PhD in 2009, I have held a variety of roles in Higher Education, both professional and academic. Before moving to the Centre, I established and led a team of Digital Research Facilitators within Information Services. Prior to that, I was a Project Officer at EDINA, a national data centre and centre for digital excellence based at the University of Edinburgh. I worked on bibliographic and multimedia projects, and I was responsible for managing the Statistical Accounts of Scotland, a service that makes a set of over 900 fascinating historical texts available for researchers to search, analyse and engage with online.

I previously held a short-term lectureship in Digital Humanities in the School of Languages, Literature and Cultures and remain an affiliate of the  Centre for the History of the Book, where I was based during an AHRC fellowship.  I was also an AHRC-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow on the project Poetry Beyond Text: Vision, Text and Cognition at the University of Dundee.
