Background

Dr Mizen completed her medical degree and an intercalated BScMedSci in Psychological Medicine at the University of Glasgow.  She completed her foundation years of medical training in the west of Scotland and then moved to Edinburgh for her psychiatry training.  She undertook a neuroscience PhD via the PsySTAR (Psychiatry: Scottish Training in Academic Research) MRF/MRC funded programme.  This was a laboratory based PhD focussing on electrophysiological characterisation of a new rat model of SYNGAP1-related intellectual disability.  She now conducts clinical research with people affected by the same genetic condition and is running the Evaluation of Sleep in SYNGAP1 study.  She is also a Consultant Psychiatrist in the NHS Lothian Learning Disability Service.

Qualifications

Research summary

Genetic causes of intellectual disability and the phenotypes associated with them.

Current research interests

Dr Mizen is interested in sleep in SYNGAP1-related Intellectual Disability as this genetic condition is associated with significant sleep disturbance, but the sleep architecture and circadian rhythm have not yet been evaluated. She is also interested in studying genetic causes of intellectual disability in adults and their clinical presentations.

Past research interests

Electrophysiological characterisation of rats with a SYNGAP1 deletion.

Genetic Causes in Adults with Intellectual Disability (GCAID) study - Senior Clinical Research Fellow

Current project grants

EVOSIS funded by the Simons Initiative for the Developing Brain and The Patrick Wild Centre, University of Edinburgh.
GCAID funded by the Patrick Wild Centre, University of Edinburgh and the RS Macdonald Charitable Trust.
