Background

Lena completed her PhD in Evolutionary Biology at Imperial College London in 2010. She was a post-doctoral research fellow (2011-16) and assistant professor (2016-18) at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, coordinating a large-scale mosquito net durability project in Tanzania. Lena also acted as co-chair of the ‘Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN) priorities’ workstream within the Roll Back Malaria Partnership-Vector Control Working Group (2015-18).

In July 2018, Lena joined the CMVM Research Office of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine (CMVM) as Research Impact Officer. She supported the College Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 submission by developing impact case studies. She was working with researchers, academics and clinicians to identify, broaden, report and evidence the real world benefits (= impact) of their research studies.

In Dec 2021, Lena's role changed to Senior Strategic Research Coordinator, where she was responsible for the development and implementation of strategically important research support activities for CMVM. She was responsible for research ethics, including the set up and coordination of the Edinburgh Medical School Research Ethics Committee (EMREC) and strategically supported international and global health research within CMVM. She was also involved in Athena Swan and the CMVM Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee.

Lena joined the Edinburgh Research Office (ERO) Impact and Engagement team in September 2023 as Research Impact Manager for CMVM, one of three University Research Impact Managers. She is responsible for developing and implementing the CMVM Research Impact Strategy to effect structural and cultural change and to support researchers with the impact of their research. She is working with engagement professionals, research managers, academics and clinicians across the University and College to identify, maximise and celebrate research with societal impact.

Lena is an active member of the Edinburgh Race Equality Network, the Research Impact Network and ARMA.
