Biography

Background

Kevin graduated from the University of Glasgow as a veterinary surgeon in 2005, and for many years worked as a first opinion small animal veterinarian in a range of clinics around the UK. Within this time, Kevin developed a interest in behaviour, and completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling at the University of Southampton before starting a private behaviour referral practice in the North East of Scotland in 2011.  From 2014-20, Kevin was based at the University of Lincoln initially involved in researching a novel anti-anxiety medication for dogs before completing a 5-year post combining a PhD and residency in veterinary behavioural medicine, and teaching on the MSc Clinical Animal Behaviour. Kevin defended his PhD research on the characterisation and management of frustration in dogs, and is a Diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine. Kevin is registered as an RCVS and EBVS® European Veterinary Specialist in Behavioural Medicine.

Joining the R(D)SVS in early 2021, Kevin is Head of the Behaviour Clinic within the Hospital for Small Animals where he currently sees patients referred for assessment and treatment of problem behaviours. Kevin teaches postgraduate students on the University of Edinburgh MSc Clinical Animal Behaviour (where he is Course Organiser for the Clinical Animal Behaviour in Practice module), and behavioural medicine to BVM&S undergraduates. His research interests are diverse, including developing objective measures for the assessment of problem behaviours, assessing the efficacy of treatments for such problems, and furthering the understanding of the complex interplay between medical and behavioural problems in companion animals.
