Background
Gonzalo joined Prof Ross Fitzgerald's lab at The Roslin Institute in 2017 as a postdoctoral research fellow. He applies comparative genome sequence analysis in order to understand Staphylococcus aureus evolution, dispersion and host adaptation, and thus combat the infectious diseases caused by this pathogen in both humans and livestock. Before then, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher (2013-2016) on HIV molecular phylodynamics with Prof Andrew Leigh Brown, also in the University of Edinburgh. Before moving to Edinburgh, Gonzalo completed his PhD (2012) in Madrid, Spain, studying the molecular epidemiology of HIV. His main research interests are molecular epidemiology and evolutionary dynamics of pathogens and the application of phylogenetic analyses to these fields.
Qualifications
2012 - PhD in Molecular Biology. Autonomous University, Madrid, Spain
2006 - BSc in Biology. Complutense University, Madrid, Spain (Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award). Dissertation: Impact of immigration on the HIV epidemics in Madrid: epidemiological, clinical and molecular perspectives
