Dr. Emine Sökmen Adalı

Background

She received her PhD from Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Türkiye), focusing on the fortresses of the Mithradatic Kingdom and their spatial attributes to shed light on their significance in the administration of the Pontic Kingdom. Her research interests specifically lie in Hellenistic and Roman Pontus and Galatia. She participates in various archaeological projects in these regions both as a team member and director. Additionally, she conducted research on the management of the Temple of Augustus and Rome in Ancyra during the Ottoman Period. She is an assistant professor of anthropology at Social Sciences University of Ankara in Türkiye. Since 2017, she has been leading the Örükaya Archaeological Research Project at the Alaca Region in Çorum. The Project aims to examine Roman water management strategies in Anatolia through the lens of the Örükaya Roman Dam. Dr. Sokmen was previously a post-doctoral fellow at Koç University’s Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED). For the 2022-2023 academic year, she is an academic visitor at Edinburgh University, School of History, Classics and Archaeology, as a recipient of a research scholarship from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK), for her project on mapping the Roman Dams in Mediterranean World and technology transfer.
