David Rankin

Research Fellow

Background

David Rankin is a Research Fellow at the Usher Institute, University of Edinburgh and is a team-member in the Edinburgh Qualitative Health Research Group (EQual). He gained experience in applied qualitative health research during his postgraduate studies, including a PhD completed whilst working full-time at Edinburgh, and work on multiple research projects. Dr Rankin has expertise in using qualitative methods to explore individuals’ experiences of living with and self-managing chronic conditions. He also offers expertise in conducting exploratory research to support development, and undertake process evaluations, of complex health interventions often set within clinical trials. Throughout his career, Dr Rankin has produced high-spec qualitative research directed towards improving people’s healthcare experiences and its delivery, along with addressing health inequalities.

Research summary

Dr Rankin specialises in research involving people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This focuses on:

  • Structured education programmes to support diabetes self-management
  • Use of hybrid closed-loops
  • Young children’s (and their parents’) experiences of managing diabetes 
  • Complex interventions to support individuals with diabetic foot ulcers
  • Identifying and addressing inequities in access to diabetes technologies
  • Healthcare professionals’ experiences of supporting individuals living with diabetes
