David Oulton

Web and Digital Developer

Background

An Edinburgh native, I was introduced to design concepts and internet technology when I had to build my first website as a self-employed proofreader.

Since starting with the University in 2011 I've progressed from content writing and design to full-stack web development, building custom research sites, mapping tools, virtual tours and more, alongside managing various CMS and online services.

I was part of the initiative to introduce digital methods to humanities research, attending several summer schools and online courses to learn about TEI/MEI, Linked data, and many aspects of digital cultural heritage.

Recent interests include digital estate decarbonisation - using fast-loading low-maintenance static websites.

I am currently on short-term Innovation Fellowship grant at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, investigating how to use of public databases to accelerate net-zero uptake in shared buildings, part of my work with property management project 7days.property
